BIK — Credit Information Bureau

What is BIK? How does the Credit Information Bureau work, what does a BIK report contain and why credit scoring matters for your finances.

What is BIK?

BIK (Biuro Informacji Kredytowej) is the largest database in Poland containing credit history information about consumers and businesses. It was established in 1997 on the initiative of the Polish Bank Association and is co-owned by dozens of banks operating in Poland.

How does BIK work?

Banks, credit unions (SKOK) and lending companies provide BIK with information about:

  • Granted loans and credit
  • Repayment timeliness (month by month)
  • Current debt balance
  • Closed obligations

When you apply for a loan, the bank sends a query to BIK and receives your report — complete credit history plus scoring (point assessment).

BIK scoring

Scoring is a number from 1 to 660 points that determines your credit risk. The higher the score, the better — it means lower probability of default.

Scoring considers, among others:

  • Repayment timeliness (most important factor)
  • Number and types of obligations
  • Use of credit limits
  • Length of credit history
  • Number of credit inquiries

What BIK doesn't contain?

BIK does not collect information about:

  • Personal account balance
  • Salary
  • Assets
  • Arrears to ZUS, tax office or utility providers (these go to BIG, not BIK)

How to download a report?

Every consumer can download a free BIK report twice a year (every 6 months) at bik.pl. Identity verification through PLN 1 transfer or Trusted Profile.

BIK vs BIG

BIK and BIG (Economic Information Bureaus, e.g., KRD, ERIF) are different databases. BIK collects credit history; BIG — information about arrears to any creditors (telecom operator, landlord, electricity provider).
