ISIN — what is ISIN number and how to read it

ISIN number is an international securities identifier. Learn how to read it, where to find it and why it's important when buying ETFs.

Definition

ISIN (International Securities Identification Number) is a 12-character code that uniquely identifies a security worldwide. Each stock, bond, ETF or other financial instrument has its unique ISIN number.

ISIN structure

ISIN consists of three parts:

Element Length Description Example
Country code 2 characters Country of issuer registration (ISO 3166) IE (Ireland)
Identification number 9 characters Unique security number 00B4L5Y983
Check digit 1 character Correctness verification (calculated by algorithm)

Example: IE00B4L5Y983 — this is the ISIN of iShares Core MSCI World UCITS ETF, registered in Ireland.

  • IE — Ireland (most European UCITS ETFs)
  • LU — Luxembourg (second popular fund domicile)
  • US — United States (American ETFs)
  • PL — Poland (companies from Warsaw Stock Exchange)
  • DE — Germany

Why is ISIN important?

Unambiguous identification

Ticker (e.g. VUSA) may mean different things on different exchanges. ISIN is always the same — regardless of exchange, broker or trading currency.

Finding ETF at broker

When you want to buy a specific ETF, the best method is to enter the ISIN number in the broker's search. This eliminates the risk of error.

Comparing instruments

Two ETFs may have similar names but different ISINs — this means they are different funds (e.g. accumulating vs distributing version).

Where to find ISIN number?

  • Issuer's website (e.g. ishares.com, vanguard.co.uk)
  • justETF.com — ETF database with ISIN search
  • Broker platform — in instrument details
  • Google — enter ETF name + "ISIN"
