Envelope budgeting system — what it is and how it works
What is the envelope budgeting system? A classic home budget management method in digital version — principles, advantages and practical application.
What is the envelope system?
The envelope budgeting system is a money management method where you divide your income into categories (envelopes) and spend from each envelope only the allocated amount. When an envelope is empty — you stop spending in that category.
Traditionally, physical envelopes with cash were used. Today, the envelope system works digitally — through bank sub-accounts, budgeting apps, or dedicated tools.
How does the envelope system work?
Step 1: Define categories
Typical envelopes:
- Bills and rent
- Food
- Transportation
- Entertainment
- Savings
- Emergency fund
Step 2: Allocate amounts
Based on expense analysis from the last 2–3 months, you allocate specific amounts to each envelope. Sum of envelopes = Your income.
Step 3: Spend from envelopes
You take each expense from the appropriate envelope. When the "food" envelope is empty — you cook with what you have in the fridge.
Advantages of the envelope system
- Simplicity — doesn't require complicated spreadsheets
- Visibility — you immediately see how much is left in each category
- Discipline — physical (or digital) spending limits work better than abstract budgets
- Flexibility — you can transfer funds between envelopes if it's a conscious decision
Disadvantages and limitations
- Requires regular updating
- With many categories, it becomes complicated
- Doesn't account for irregular expenses (unless you create a "surprises" envelope)
Digital version of the envelope system
Modern implementations:
- Bank sub-accounts — each account is a separate envelope
- Budgeting apps — automatic assignment of expenses to categories
- Google Sheets/Excel — manual, but full control
