S&P 500 is an index of 500 largest American companies. Over the last 30 years it returned an average of 10.5% annually (in USD). It's one of the most popular investment benchmarks in the world and Warren Buffett's favorite index.
By investing in S&P 500, you gain exposure to companies like Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Nvidia or Google — without having to select individual stocks.
How to buy S&P 500 from Poland?
You can't buy the index directly — you need an ETF fund that tracks it. Here are the most popular options:
S&P 500 ETFs available for European investors
| ETF | ISIN | TER | Currency | Dividends |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iShares Core S&P 500 (CSPX) | IE00B5BMR087 | 0.07% | USD | Accumulating |
| Vanguard S&P 500 (VUAA) | IE00BFMXXD54 | 0.07% | USD | Accumulating |
| SPDR S&P 500 (SPY5) | IE00B6YX5C33 | 0.03% | USD | Accumulating |
| Invesco S&P 500 (SPXS) | IE00B3YCGJ38 | 0.05% | USD | Accumulating |
Important: As European investor you cannot buy US ETFs (SPY, VOO) due to PRIIP regulations. The above funds are domiciled in Ireland (UCITS) and are available on European exchanges.
Where to buy?
- XTB — 0% commission, VUAA and CSPX available instantly
- mBank eMakler — access to European exchanges, 0.29% commission
- Bossa — access through foreign exchanges
- DEGIRO — Dutch broker, low commissions
- Interactive Brokers — broadest access, for more advanced users
ETFs on GPW (in PLN)
Beta Securities ETFs are also listed on GPW:
- Beta ETF S&P 500 PLN-Hedged — with currency hedging
- Beta ETF S&P 500 — without currency hedging
Advantage is PLN trading without currency conversion, but liquidity and TER can be less favorable than Irish ETFs.
Accumulating vs distributing — what to choose?
- Accumulating (ACC) — dividends are automatically reinvested. Better tax-wise in Poland as you don't pay Belka tax on each dividend.
- Distributing (DIST) — dividends paid to account. Each payment is a taxable event.
Recommendation: For Polish investor building wealth — accumulating.
Currency — USD, EUR or PLN?
S&P 500 ETFs invest in American companies, so your real exposure is to USD regardless of ETF denomination currency.
- You buy CSPX in EUR on Xetra? Inside the fund there are still dollars.
- You buy Beta ETF S&P 500 in PLN? Exposure still to USD (unless PLN-Hedged version).
Denomination currency only affects currency conversion costs at purchase.
Investment strategy — DCA
Best strategy for most investors is Dollar Cost Averaging (DCA) — regular buying for fixed amount:
- Set monthly budget (e.g., 500 PLN)
- Choose purchase day (e.g., 10th of each month)
- Buy ETF for entire amount regardless of price
- Don't try to "catch bottoms" — markets are unpredictable
DCA eliminates emotions and averages purchase price over time.
Taxes
- Belka tax (19%) on capital gains when selling
- IKE — no tax on withdrawal after age 60
- IKZE — PIT deduction + 10% lump sum tax at end
Worth considering buying S&P 500 ETFs within IKE — it's legal way to avoid 19% tax.
How much can you earn?
With regular investing of 500 PLN monthly in S&P 500 (assuming 10% annually):
| Period | Contributed capital | Portfolio value |
|---|---|---|
| 5 years | 30,000 PLN | ~38,700 PLN |
| 10 years | 60,000 PLN | ~102,400 PLN |
| 20 years | 120,000 PLN | ~379,700 PLN |
| 30 years | 180,000 PLN | ~1,130,200 PLN |
Simplified calculations, without considering inflation and taxes.
