How Much Do Poles Spend on Electricity?

The average Polish household pays 200 to 500 PLN monthly for electricity. This is one of the largest fixed expenses in the household budget — and one of the easiest to optimize.

Switch Lighting to LED

This is the simplest and fastest change with immediate effect.

Bulb Type Power (for 800 lm) Annual Cost*
Traditional incandescent 60 W ~52 PLN
CFL fluorescent 13 W ~11 PLN
LED 8 W ~7 PLN

*at 5h daily and 0.95 PLN/kWh price

Replacing 10 traditional bulbs with LEDs saves about 450 PLN annually. LED bulbs last 15,000–50,000 hours, so the investment pays back in a few months.

Choose the Right Tariff

G11 Tariff (Single-zone)

Fixed price throughout the day. Good if you use electricity evenly.

G12 Tariff (Two-zone)

Cheaper electricity at night (usually 22:00–6:00) and on weekends. Ideal if you have:

  • Electric water heater
  • Washing machine with timer
  • Dishwasher
  • Electric car

G12w Tariff (Weekend)

Additional zone of cheaper electricity on weekends. Check with your supplier.

How to check if it's worth changing tariffs? Analyze bills from the last 12 months and calculate how much electricity you use during peak hours vs. off-peak.

Daily Energy-Saving Habits

Standby is a Silent Thief

Devices in standby mode consume 5–10% of household electricity. Connect them to power strips with switches:

  • TV + set-top box
  • Chargers
  • Computer equipment

Energy Class of Appliances

When replacing household appliances, choose the highest energy class. The difference in consumption between class A and D can be up to 50%.

Cooking

  • Cover pots with lids (30% energy savings)
  • Use electric kettle instead of boiling water on stove
  • Induction cooktop uses less energy than ceramic

Washing and Drying

  • Wash at 30°C instead of 60°C — save 40% energy
  • Dry clothes on standing rack instead of tumble dryer
  • Run washing machine with full load

Solar Panels — Long-term Savings

Installing photovoltaic panels is the biggest investment but also the greatest savings potential:

  • 5 kWp installation cost: 20,000–28,000 PLN
  • Annual production: about 5,000 kWh
  • Annual savings: about 4,000–5,000 PLN
  • Return on investment: 5–7 years

Since 2024, new prosumers settle under the net-billing system — they sell surpluses at market price. More about this in our solar panel guide.

Heat Pump + Solar Panels

Combining a heat pump with solar panels is one of the most effective ways to reduce heating and energy costs. A heat pump uses electricity but produces 3–5x more thermal energy than electrical energy.

Action Plan

  1. Week 1 — replace bulbs with LED (investment: 100–200 PLN)
  2. Week 2 — connect electronics to power strips with switches
  3. Month 1 — analyze tariff and consider changing
  4. Month 2–3 — change washing and cooking habits
  5. Year 1 — consider solar panels or heat pump
