How to save on laundry — practical ways to lower bills

Proven ways to save on laundry. Energy, water, detergents — how much laundry really costs and how to reduce this cost by up to 50%.

How much does laundry really cost?

One wash in the washing machine costs 1 to 4 PLN — depending on temperature, program and electricity tariff. With 5 washes per week, that's 250-1,000 PLN annually. Add detergents (500-1,200 PLN/year) and a dryer, and the amounts become serious.

Saving on energy

Wash at lower temperatures

This is the simplest change with the biggest effect:

Temperature Energy consumption Cost per wash*
90°C ~2.5 kWh ~2.50 PLN
60°C ~1.5 kWh ~1.50 PLN
40°C ~0.8 kWh ~0.80 PLN
30°C ~0.5 kWh ~0.50 PLN

*At 1 PLN/kWh price

Modern detergents work effectively at 30°C. The 90°C program is only needed for heavily soiled items or for disinfection (e.g., towels, bedding of a sick person).

Full drum = fewer washes

A washing machine uses similar amounts of energy regardless of whether it's full or half empty. Wash with full drums, but don't overload — clothes won't get clean and you'll need to rewash.

Use night tariff

If you have G12 tariff (dual-zone), wash at night or on weekends — electricity is up to 40% cheaper.

Eco program

Eco programs take longer but use less energy and water. Savings can be 30-50% energy compared to standard programs.

Saving on detergents

Use smaller doses

Manufacturers recommend doses for hard water and heavily soiled clothes. In most cases, 2/3 or even 1/2 of the recommended dose is enough.

Compare prices per wash, not per package

A more expensive powder per package may be cheaper per wash. Always check the number of washes per package.

Pods vs powder vs liquid

  • Powder — cheapest, best for white laundry
  • Liquid — better in low temperatures, leaves no traces
  • Pods — most expensive but convenient and precisely dosed

Natural alternatives

  • Soap nuts — about 0.30 PLN per wash, ecological
  • Vinegar instead of fabric softener — softens fabrics, costs pennies
  • Baking soda — enhances detergent effectiveness

Saving on drying

A dryer is one of the biggest electricity consumers in the home — one drying cycle costs 2-4 PLN.

Alternatives:

  • Clothes drying rack — cost 0 PLN
  • Drying on balcony/outside — natural, free, smells fresh
  • Longer spinning (1200-1400 rpm) — shortens drying time

Choosing an energy-efficient washing machine

If your washing machine is more than 10 years old, replacing it with a new class A (formerly A+++) can pay back in 3-5 years:

  • Old washing machine: ~200 kWh/year → ~200 PLN
  • New class A: ~50 kWh/year → ~50 PLN
  • Savings: ~150 PLN/year + less water consumption

Summary — how much can you save?

Change Annual savings
Washing at 30°C instead of 60°C ~250 PLN
Full drums (fewer washes) ~150 PLN
Smaller detergent dose ~200 PLN
Giving up the dryer ~400 PLN
Night tariff ~100 PLN
Total ~1,100 PLN/year
