How to save for vacation — planning and travel budget
Practical guide to vacation planning without breaking the budget. How to save on flights, accommodation, food and attractions — with specific amounts and tricks.
10 min czytaniaVacation doesn't have to ruin your budget
The average Polish family (2+2) spends 8,000-15,000 PLN on two-week vacation abroad. But with proper planning you can reduce this cost by 30-50% — without giving up comfort and great experiences.
Step 1: Set budget BEFORE you start planning
Before you enter booking.com, answer these questions:
- How much can I spend on vacation without guilt?
- Is this money saved beforehand, or will I "take from current expenses"?
- What's the absolute maximum?
Rule of thumb: vacation shouldn't cost more than 1 monthly net family income.
Break down budget by categories
| Category | Typical share |
|---|---|
| Transport (flights, fuel) | 25-35% |
| Accommodation | 30-40% |
| Food | 15-25% |
| Attractions and entertainment | 10-15% |
| Buffer for surprises | 10% |
Step 2: Flights — where to find deals
Date flexibility = savings
Midweek flights (Tuesday-Thursday) can be 30-50% cheaper than weekend ones. Shifting departure by 1-2 days can save 200-500 PLN per person.
Tools for hunting cheap flights
- Google Flights — comparison with map and price calendar
- Skyscanner — "everywhere" option shows cheapest destinations
- Kiwi.com — connects flights from different airlines (self-transfer)
- Price alerts — set notification on Google Flights and wait for price drop
When to buy?
- Europe: 4-8 weeks before departure
- Long-haul: 2-4 months earlier
- Last minute: risky with family, but works for flexible singles/couples
Baggage
Budget airlines (Ryanair, Wizz Air) make money on baggage. Pack in carry-on — save 80-200 PLN per person roundtrip.
Step 3: Accommodation — alternatives to hotels
Apartments (Airbnb, Booking)
For families almost always cheaper than hotel — you get kitchen (savings on food), more space and washing machine.
Compare on multiple platforms
Same apartment may have different prices on Booking, Airbnb and owner's direct website. Check all three.
Off-season and outside center
- Hotel in Barcelona center: 600 PLN/night
- Apartment 15 min by metro from center: 250 PLN/night
- Same apartment in September instead of July: 180 PLN/night
Loyalty programs
Booking Genius, IHG Rewards, Marriott Bonvoy — free membership gives 10-15% discount on accommodation.
Step 4: Food — eat like locals
Cook breakfast yourself
Apartment with kitchen + local shopping = breakfast for 10-15 PLN per person instead of 40-60 PLN at hotel.
Lunch instead of dinner at restaurant
In many countries (Spain, Italy, Portugal) restaurants offer "menu del día" — lunch for 10-15 EUR with wine. Same restaurant charges 30-50 EUR in evening.
Local markets and street food
Best food is often cheapest — markets, stalls, local bars. Mercado da Ribeira in Lisbon, La Boqueria in Barcelona, markets in Asia.
Tap water
In most of Western Europe tap water is drinkable. Bottled water in restaurant costs 3-5 EUR; from tap — 0 EUR. Over two weeks that's 80-140 EUR savings.
Step 5: Attractions — plan wisely
- Free attractions: museums with free entry (e.g., first Sunday of month), parks, beaches, hiking trails
- City passes: in many cities tourist cards (e.g., Lisboa Card, Roma Pass) pay off if you plan 3+ attractions
- Book online: tickets bought online are often 10-20% cheaper than at the box office
- Free walking tours: tip-based tours — pay what you want (usually 10-20 EUR)
Step 6: Currency and payments
Multi-currency card
Revolut, Wise, ZEN — interbank rate instead of bank rate (2-5% savings on every foreign transaction).
Always pay in local currency
When terminal asks "pay in PLN or EUR?" — ALWAYS choose local currency. DCC (Dynamic Currency Conversion) is hidden markup of 3-7%.
Cash for markets and small bars
Have some cash with you — not everything can be paid by card, especially at markets and in smaller towns.
Vacation savings plan
