If you own a car in Poland, you must have OC insurance. But do you also need AC? What about NNW? Insurance agents will happily sell you the full package, but it's not always worth it. Let's break it down.
OC — Mandatory Third-Party Liability Insurance
What is it?
OC (odpowiedzialność cywilna — civil liability) is the only mandatory car insurance in Poland. It doesn't protect you or your car — it protects other people: other drivers, pedestrians, and passengers whom you might injure, and property you might damage in an accident.
What does it cover?
- Personal injury (bodily harm, death) to others — up to a minimum of €5.21 million
- Property damage (someone else's car, fence, building) — up to a minimum of €1.05 million
- Medical treatment and rehabilitation costs for victims
- Court-awarded damages and annuities
What does it NOT cover?
- Damage to your own car
- Your own injuries
- Intentional damage
- Damage to goods you're transporting
How much does OC cost?
OC pricing depends on several factors:
- Driver's age and experience — young drivers (18–25) pay 2–3x more
- Claims history — accident-free driving lowers your premium (BM — Bonus-Malus system)
- Car make and model — sports and luxury cars cost more
- Location — big cities = higher premiums
- Engine size — bigger engine = more expensive policy
Approximate annual prices:
- Experienced driver, compact car: 400–800 PLN
- Young driver, first car: 1,500–4,000 PLN
- Premium/sports car: 1,000–3,000 PLN
Penalty for no OC
Driving without OC is serious. UFG (Ubezpieczeniowy Fundusz Gwarancyjny — Insurance Guarantee Fund) imposes fines:
- Passenger car: up to 8,600 PLN for being uninsured over 14 days (2026)
- If you cause an accident without OC, UFG pays the victim but recovers the money from you (recourse claim)
AC — Autocasco (Voluntary Comprehensive Coverage)
What is it?
AC (autocasco) is voluntary insurance that protects your car against damage, theft, and destruction.
What does it cover?
- Car theft
- Collision damage (even if it's your fault)
- Weather damage (hail, flood, storm)
- Vandalism
- Animal collisions
- Car fire
What does it usually NOT cover?
- Normal wear and tear
- Damage while driving under the influence
- Driving without a valid inspection (przegląd techniczny)
- Leaving keys in the car (in theft cases)
- Personal belongings inside the car
How much does AC cost?
AC is significantly more expensive than OC. The premium depends on the car's value:
- Car worth 30,000 PLN: 800–1,500 PLN/year
- Car worth 60,000 PLN: 1,500–3,000 PLN/year
- Car worth 100,000+ PLN: 3,000–6,000+ PLN/year
Is AC worth it?
Yes, if:
- You have a new or expensive car (above 40,000–50,000 PLN)
- The car is leased or financed (often required)
- You park on the street (theft/vandalism risk)
- You can't afford to pay for repairs out of pocket
No, if:
- You have an older car with low value (below 15,000–20,000 PLN)
- The AC premium approaches the car's value
- You have savings to cover potential repairs
Important: deductibles and depreciation
Check your policy for:
- Deductible (franszyza/udział własny) — the amount you pay yourself per claim (e.g., 500 PLN)
- Parts depreciation (amortyzacja) — whether the insurer pays for new parts or deducts for wear (using cheaper, used parts)
- Sum insured — fixed vs. declining (as the car loses value)
NNW — Personal Accident Insurance
What is it?
NNW (następstwa nieszczęśliwych wypadków — accident consequences) protects you and your passengers in case of a car accident. It pays compensation for bodily injury, permanent disability, or death.
What does it cover?
- Permanent disability (percentage of the insured sum)
- Death resulting from an accident
- Medical treatment and rehabilitation costs
- Temporary inability to work (in some variants)
How much does it cost?
NNW is the cheapest of the three: 30–150 PLN/year for a sum of 10,000–50,000 PLN.
Is NNW worth it?
Debatable. The insured sums are usually low (10,000–50,000 PLN), and payouts for disability are percentage-based. If you have good life insurance or group insurance from your employer, NNW may be redundant.
How to Save on Car Insurance
- Compare offers — use comparison sites (Mubi, Ubea, Rankomat). Differences between insurers can reach 50–100%.
- Build a claims-free history — the longer you drive without claims, the more you save (BM system).
- Increase your AC deductible — higher deductible = lower premium.
- Buy a bundle — OC + AC + NNW together is usually cheaper than separately.
- Pay annually — installment payments cost 5–15% more.
- Don't wait until the last day — insurers may raise prices for last-minute buyers.
How Car Insurance Affects Your Budget
Car insurance is one of the bigger fixed expenses — from 500 PLN to even 10,000 PLN per year depending on your situation. It's worth factoring this into your financial plan.
With Freenance, you can add insurance as a fixed expense and see how it impacts your Financial Freedom Runway — helping you make informed decisions about whether premium AC coverage is worth it or if you'd be better off saving that money.
FAQ
Does OC transfer to a new owner when selling a car?
Yes. The seller's OC automatically transfers to the buyer. The new owner can continue the policy until expiration or cancel it and buy their own.
What happens if I forget to renew my OC?
OC auto-renews unless you cancel it in writing at least 1 day before expiration. But if you don't pay the premium, the insurer can terminate the contract — and you'll be driving without OC (risking a UFG fine).
Is AC mandatory for leased cars?
It's not legally mandatory, but practically yes — leasing companies require AC as a condition of the lease agreement. They often also set minimum coverage requirements.
Do I need a Green Card for driving abroad?
A Green Card extends your OC to countries outside the EEA (e.g., Turkey, Morocco, Tunisia). If you plan to drive outside Europe — yes, it's necessary. Within the EEA, Polish OC works automatically.
