The Polish Baltic coast stretches 440 km from Swinoujscie near the German border to the Vistula Spit near Kaliningrad. It offers wide sandy beaches, coastal forests, historic towns, and — in peak season — crowds comparable to Mediterranean resorts.
For Polish residents and visitors based in Poland, the Baltic coast is the default domestic holiday. No passport needed, no flight required, and increasingly competitive with foreign destinations on quality (if not on weather).
Best Destinations Along the Coast
Tri-City (Gdansk, Sopot, Gdynia)
The most versatile option. Gdansk has genuine historical depth (the old town rebuilt after WWII is extraordinary), Sopot has a party atmosphere and the longest wooden pier in Europe (511m), and Gdynia offers a modern urban beach experience.
Who it suits: Couples, solo travellers, culture enthusiasts. Less ideal for families seeking quiet beach time — the city beaches are crowded in July-August.
Hel Peninsula
A 35 km sand spit extending into the Bay of Gdansk. The villages of Jastarnia, Jurata, and Hel offer excellent windsurfing, kitesurfing, and seal-watching. Less developed than the Tri-City, with a more relaxed atmosphere.
Getting there: Train from Gdansk (2 hours, scenic), car (parking is hellish in summer), or water tram from Gdansk (1.5 hours).
Kolobrzeg
Poland's largest health resort town. Known for salt graduation towers, mud baths, and therapeutic mineral waters. The beach is wide and the town is well-maintained. Popular with older travellers and families.
Leba and Slowinski National Park
Home to the shifting sand dunes — a unique landscape in Europe. The dunes reach 42 metres high and move up to 10 metres per year. The beach near Leba is stunning, but accommodation in Leba town is overpriced and tacky.
Tip: Stay in Rowy or Smoldzino (nearby villages) and drive to the dunes. Half the price, twice the charm.
Swinoujscie
Right on the German border, Swinoujscie feels different from other Polish resorts — wider promenade, German day-trippers, and a slightly international atmosphere. The beach is one of the widest on the Baltic. Good value compared to Sopot.
Mielno, Ustka, Darlowo
Smaller resorts with a local flavour. Cheaper than the big names, with adequate beaches and basic infrastructure. Good for families who want a simple, affordable beach holiday without the Sopot prices.

Weather Reality Check
The Baltic Sea is not the Mediterranean. Here is what to actually expect:
- Water temperature: 16-20C in July-August. Swimmable but brisk. Some years reach 22C.
- Air temperature: 20-26C on good days, 15-18C on bad days. Pack layers.
- Rain: Expect 2-3 rainy days per week. Always have an indoor backup plan.
- Wind: The coast is windy, which makes it great for kite/windsurfing but cold when wet.
The honest comparison: A week on the Baltic costs 60-80% of a week in Croatia or Greece but with worse weather and colder water. The advantage is no flight, Polish language, and the unique charm of Polish coastal culture (smoked fish, amber, sand dunes).
Saving Money on the Baltic
- Go in June or September — 40-60% cheaper, fewer crowds, and June weather is often better than August.
- Book direct — many Baltic apartment owners list on OLX or local websites with 10-20% lower prices than Booking.com.
- Cook breakfast and lunch, eat out for dinner — a smażalnia dinner is 25-35 PLN per person.
- Skip Sopot if on a budget — prices there are 30-50% higher than comparable towns.
- Rent bikes, not cars — many coastal towns have bike paths. Rental is 30-50 PLN per day.
Tracking Your Seaside Spending
Baltic holidays have a pattern of small daily costs — ice cream, waffles, attraction tickets, parking — that add up fast. A family of four can easily spend 200-300 PLN per day on incidentals alone. Use Freenance to set a daily spending limit and log expenses as they happen.
