Citi Handlowy Integration — Import Transactions to Freenance
How to import transactions from Citi Handlowy into Freenance. Step-by-step CSV export and automatic categorization.
Importing Transactions from Citi Handlowy
Citi Handlowy (Bank Handlowy w Warszawie) offers CSV export of your transaction history through CitiDirect (corporate clients) and Citibank Online (retail clients). Once you have the file, you can upload it to Freenance — the system automatically categorizes spending, detects subscriptions, and shows your Financial Freedom Runway.
Integration status (May 2026): Citi Handlowy generates several CSV variants depending on which portal and account type you use. We add support for new variants based on user reports. If your import returns "0 incomes, 0 expenses created", email us with an anonymized sample — we add new format support within 1–3 business days.
Step 1: Export from Citi Handlowy
- Sign in to CitiDirect (citidirect.handlowy.pl) or Citibank Online.
- Go to Accounts → Statements or Transaction history and pick the account you want to export.
- Set the date range. CitiDirect allows up to 12 months per export.
- Choose CSV format and, if asked, set encoding to UTF-8.
- Authorize with your token/app and download the file.
Note: Freenance imports CSV and MT940 files only. XLS/Excel is not supported — if Citi only offers XLS, open the file in Excel/LibreOffice and save as CSV (UTF-8).
Step 2: Rename the file
Freenance expects CSV files to follow this naming convention:
citi-{account-number}.csv
Example: citi-12345678901234567890123456.csv (full IBAN account number, no spaces, no PL prefix).
Step 3: Import to Freenance
- Sign in to Freenance.
- Open Configuration → Bank import.
- Drag the CSV onto the upload area or click Choose file.
- Click Upload.
- After a few seconds the import job will report how many incomes and expenses were created and the date range covered.
What happens after import
- Automatic categorization based on transaction descriptions; learns from your edits.
- Recurring payment detection — subscriptions, loan instalments, rent get flagged as recurring.
- Duplicate detection — overlapping import windows skip transactions already in your database.
- Internal transfer detection — transfers between your own accounts in Freenance aren't counted as income or expense.
Security
- No bank account access — Freenance never asks for your CitiDirect or Citibank Online login or password.
- Encrypted transmission — all uploads use HTTPS.
- Delete any time — from your Freenance account you can delete individual transactions, an entire account, or all your data (GDPR-compliant).
Other banks in Freenance
Freenance also imports from PKO, ING, Revolut, Credit Agricole, Nest Bank, Millennium, and mBank. All accounts live in one dashboard with one categorization model and one budget.

FAQ
Does Freenance work with both CitiDirect and Citibank Online?
Yes — both portals export CSV files that Freenance can ingest, although the column layouts differ between corporate (CitiDirect) and retail (Citibank Online) accounts. If the first variant you upload returns 0 incomes and 0 expenses, send an anonymized sample to hello@freenance.io and we will add the layout.
Do I need to share my Citi Handlowy login with Freenance?
No — Freenance never asks for your CitiDirect or Citibank Online login, password, or token codes. You export the CSV yourself inside the bank's portal and upload the file, so your banking credentials stay entirely with Citi.
How far back can I import Citi Handlowy transactions?
CitiDirect allows up to 12 months of history per CSV export, and you can run multiple exports back-to-back to reconstruct several years. Freenance deduplicates overlapping rows automatically, so you do not need to keep your date ranges perfectly aligned.
Can I import both PLN and foreign-currency Citi accounts?
Yes — each account imports as a separate file named with its full IBAN, so PLN, EUR, and USD balances remain cleanly separated. Foreign-currency transactions are converted to PLN at the historical NBP rate for budget analysis while the original amount and currency are preserved.
Is the Citi Handlowy integration regulated or licensed?
Freenance is a personal finance and net-worth tracking tool, not a regulated payment service or investment firm, and importing CSV files does not constitute regulated activity. Freenance does not provide investment advice and cannot initiate payments or transfers on your Citi accounts.
