N26 Plans 2026: Standard vs Smart vs Go (ex-You) vs Metal — Fees, ATM Limits, Cashback
All four N26 plans in one table: €0 / €4.90 / €9.90 / €16.90, free ATM withdrawals, the 1.7% non-euro fee, 1% travel cashback — and why N26 You no longer exists.

Quick Answer
N26 sells four personal plans in 2026: Standard (free), Smart (€4.90/mo), Go (€9.90/mo) and Metal (€16.90/mo). If you are searching for "N26 You", that plan no longer exists — N26 renamed it N26 Go on 3 June 2025 and moved every existing You subscriber across automatically at the same €9.90 price. The paid tiers buy three things: more free euro ATM withdrawals (2 → 3 → 5 → 8 per month, then €2 each), removal of the 1.7% fee on non-euro ATM withdrawals (free on Go and Metal only), and 1% travel cashback outside the EEA, Switzerland and the UK (Go and Metal only, for up to 12 months, enrolment required). Card payments in foreign currencies are free on every plan, including the free one. Free ATM counts differ by country — Austria and Spain get unlimited withdrawals on all tiers.
The full plan matrix
Every number below comes from N26's own plan pages and support centre, checked on 17 September 2026. Figures are the pan-EU baseline; the country exceptions follow in their own table.
| Standard | Smart | Go (ex-You) | Metal | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly price | Free | €4.90 | €9.90 | €16.90 |
| Free euro ATM withdrawals / month | 2 | 3 | 5 | 8 |
| Fee after the free limit | €2 per withdrawal | €2 | €2 | €2 |
| ATM withdrawals in foreign currency | 1.7% fee | 1.7% fee | Free | Free |
| Card payments in foreign currency | Free worldwide | Free worldwide | Free worldwide | Free worldwide |
| Travel cashback | — | — | 1% | 1% |
| Travel insurance (Allianz Assistance) | — | — | Included | Included |
| Phone + purchase insurance | — | — | — | Included |
| Physical card | €10 one-off | Included | Included | Included (metal) |
| Spaces sub-accounts | 10 | 10 | 10 | 10 |
| Stock/ETF trades | €0.90 each | €0.90 each | 3 free / month | 10 free / month |
Two lines in that table are the ones most comparison articles get wrong. Foreign-currency card payments carry no N26 markup on any plan — the 1.7% applies to ATM withdrawals in a non-euro currency, not to spending. And the cashback is not a general rate on everyday domestic spend.
What the 1% cashback actually pays
The cashback is a travel benefit on Go and Metal, not a rate on your weekly groceries. It is narrower than "1% cashback" suggests, and it expires.
- Rate: 1% on qualifying N26 Mastercard transactions.
- Where: only outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Spending in Germany, Poland, Spain or France earns nothing.
- Who: N26 Go and N26 Metal only. Standard and Smart earn no cashback.
- How long: up to 12 months, and you must enrol in the app — it is not automatic.
- Cap: N26 states no minimum spend and no limit on the amount of cashback on qualifying international spend.
If you have seen 0.1% / 0.5% cashback rates quoted for N26, treat them as stale: those figures are not on N26's current plan pages, which show only the travel cashback described above. Cashback terms have historically varied between N26's markets, so confirm the offer shown in your app before you upgrade for it.

See your Freedom Runway — freeFree ATM withdrawals differ by country
The 2/3/5/8 ladder is the baseline for Germany, France and most of the rest of Europe. Three markets break it, and the exceptions are large enough to change which plan is worth paying for.
| Country | What changes |
|---|---|
| Austria | Unlimited free ATM withdrawals on all account tiers |
| Spain | Unlimited free ATM withdrawals on all account tiers |
| Italy | Unlimited free withdrawals on Smart, Go and Metal (Standard keeps the quota) |
| Switzerland | Euro withdrawals follow the normal quota; CHF withdrawals cost 1.7% |
| Germany, France, rest of EU | Standard baseline: 2 / 3 / 5 / 8 per month, €2 after |
The practical read: in Austria and Spain, "more free ATM withdrawals" is not a reason to upgrade at all — you already have unlimited on the free plan. In Italy, €4.90 Smart buys unlimited withdrawals, which is the cheapest step on the whole list. Everywhere else, the upgrade maths is simply whether you pull cash more than twice a month.
There is also an N26 Flex tier in the line-up, priced per withdrawal rather than per month: €2 plus 1.7% on non-euro withdrawals.
Where you can actually open an N26 account
N26 is a German bank, but it is not available EU-wide. The account is open to residents of 24 countries:
Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France (not DOM/TOM residents), Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
Not available: Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Croatia and Czechia. If you are resident there, no plan on this page is purchasable regardless of price — the comparison to run instead is N26 vs Revolut vs bunq vs Wise across the EU, where the alternatives do cover those markets.
What each insurance tier includes
Go and Metal both bundle travel insurance underwritten by Allianz Assistance (AWP P&C S.A. – Dutch Branch). Metal adds two non-travel policies on top.
| Cover | Go | Metal |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency medical abroad | up to €1,000,000 | up to €1,000,000 |
| Trip cancellation / interruption | up to €10,000 | up to €10,000 |
| Baggage cover | up to €2,000 | up to €2,000 |
| Travel / baggage delay | up to €500 | up to €500 |
| Personal liability | up to €500,000 | up to €500,000 |
| Mobile phone insurance | — | up to €2,000 |
| Purchase protection | — | up to €2,500 per claim |
Limits and exclusions are set per country in the policy document N26 links from the plan page — the figures above are the headline sums shown on the German and French plan pages and can differ in your market. Insurance is the main reason Metal survives a cost-per-benefit test at €16.90; the card itself is 16 g of stainless steel, which is a preference, not a feature. Our full N26 Metal review works through whether the top tier earns its €202.80 a year.
Which plan is worth paying for
Pick on one deciding behaviour, not on the feature list. The plans overlap far more than the price ladder implies.
- Stay on Standard if you pay by card, rarely withdraw cash, and travel inside Europe. Foreign-currency payments are already free, which is what most travel spending actually is.
- Smart (€4.90) buys one extra free withdrawal and a free physical card — thin value outside Italy, where it buys unlimited withdrawals.
- Go (€9.90) is the real break point: it is the cheapest plan with free non-euro ATM withdrawals, travel insurance and the 1% travel cashback. If you leave the EEA/UK/Switzerland once or twice a year, this is the plan that pays.
- Metal (€16.90) adds €7/month over Go for phone insurance, purchase protection, 10 free trades and the metal card. Justifiable if you would otherwise buy phone insurance separately.
One caveat that applies at every tier: savings interest rates shown alongside these plans (Metal is quoted at 1.50% p.a.) move with ECB policy and differ by country. Verify the current rate in-app rather than from any article, including this one.
How this compares to Revolut's ladder
Revolut runs a similar four-tier structure at similar prices, and the two are most often shortlisted together. The honest difference is licensing and cash: N26 holds a full German banking licence, while the free-plan ATM allowances and FX rules differ meaningfully between them.
Our Revolut vs N26 comparison for Europe runs the fee tables side by side, including weekend FX markups and the plan-by-plan ATM limits that are the real cost driver for anyone who still uses cash.
FAQ
Does N26 You still exist in 2026?
No. N26 renamed N26 You to N26 Go on 3 June 2025, and all existing You subscribers were transitioned automatically within days. The price stayed at €9.90 per month. Any 2026 comparison still listing "You" as a current plan is working from pre-June-2025 information — the tier itself did not disappear, only the name.
How many free ATM withdrawals do I get on each N26 plan?
Per month: Standard 2, Smart 3, Go 5, Metal 8 euro withdrawals, then €2 per withdrawal. This is the baseline for Germany, France and most of Europe. Austria and Spain give unlimited free withdrawals on every tier, and Italy gives unlimited on Smart, Go and Metal.
What is the N26 cashback rate?
1%, available on N26 Go and N26 Metal only, on qualifying card transactions made outside the EEA, Switzerland and the UK, for up to 12 months, and only after you enrol in the app. Standard and Smart earn no cashback. Older figures of 0.1% or 0.5% are not on N26's current plan pages.
Does N26 charge a foreign transaction fee on card payments?
No. Card payments in foreign currencies are free worldwide on all four plans, including the free Standard account. The 1.7% figure people associate with N26 applies to ATM withdrawals in a non-euro currency, and only on Standard and Smart — Go and Metal remove it.
Is N26 available in Romania, Bulgaria or Hungary?
No. N26 accounts are open to residents of 24 countries, and Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Croatia and Czechia are not among them. France is included but excludes DOM/TOM residents. Availability is decided by country of residence, not citizenship.
Is N26 Metal worth €16.90 a month?
Only if you use the insurance. Over N26 Go, Metal adds roughly €84 a year for mobile phone cover (up to €2,000), purchase protection (up to €2,500 per claim), 10 free trades a month and a stainless-steel card. The free ATM step (5 → 8) and cashback are identical in substance to Go.
Can I switch N26 plans at any time?
Plan changes are handled in the app, and premium memberships run as subscriptions with their own cancellation terms — check the cancellation notice period that applies to your contract before downgrading, as it varies by market and by when you subscribed. This is one of the few plan mechanics N26 does not publish as a single pan-EU rule.
